This was an interesting experiment, and I ended up with a pretty cool abstract image. Before filling a water balloon with water I added a few drops of food coloring then froze it. Once it was frozen the balloon came off the ice very easily. I ran a little water over the ice to get some melting started then took a close up picture of the emerald colored ice.

I had the camera on a tripod and the ice on a plate to catch the water melting off the ice chunk. I had this set up on the kitchen table with the light above dimmed about 1/3 of the way down and set a flash to the right near the back of the ice and used the pop up flash on the camera. I didn't use any diffusers of any kind just hard light to really catch the details in the ice.
